Synopsis:
Cassiopeia Rising: Volume One Metamorphosis is the story of a beautiful, young girl who joins the Marines to uphold a family tradition. Set in the near future, she is deployed to the outer reaches of the galaxy where the Navy is in a struggle to gain control of a region called the Outer Ring. Her father, a marine gunny sergeant, gave her extensive training in the art of combat as she grew up, however her appearance makes it difficult to earn the respect from her peers and superiors she deserves. The story chronicles her journey from recruitment, through basic training and then out to deep space where she is assigned to a reconnaissance team. The team finds her beauty unsettling and wonders if she is hidding a dark secret. The story will continue in the next book Volume Two, which should come out sometime in 2007.
Story Background:
The story takes place on Earth and in space in a more "normal" future (i.e. there has been no devastating nuclear war, alien invasion, giant evil corporation taking over, etc.). A single economical technological development opens space exploration for the masses. There is a rush to grab as much territory as possible and results in a situation similar to settling the Western portion of the United States in the 1800’s. Along with all the good things this represents, there is also the associated opportunities for illegal operations and piracy. The United States is still the major power on Earth and takes over the unenviable task of “policing” major sections of space. As the known galaxy expands and criminals become more powerful and organized, the struggle for control becomes a nightmare. The Navy is responsible for this job and it uses the Marine Corps for reconnaissance and ground support.
